Zelij tile, a key element in Berber and Moorish architecture, is a perfect material for use in contemporary interior design.
Zelij can trace its roots back to Central Asia, from which is was ‘borrowed’ and then, thanks to its incomparable beauty, made its way west to and through the Mediterranean until it reached Fez, in
Morocco, where it attained the full expression of its potential.
Today, the ample palette of colors of zelij allows for an infinite range of composition.
The most popular shape is the square, which can be made in different sizes.

Zelij is used for walls but also for floors—for the latter, the thickness of the tile is increased to 2 cm.
It exists in a simple 10 x 10 cm format, or it can be cut at its corners and used in combination with a small ‘cabochon’ tile in an accenting color.
For floors it is also possible to use the ‘bejmat tile, measuring 15 x 5 (x 2 cm thickness).
Bejmat can be used in a simple terra cotta version or glazed with color, and can be installed in a gridded or chevron pattern.
